As the crisp fall air settles in and the holiday lights begin to glow, it’s time for fun this Thanksgiving and first week of December in the Northland – especially around Platte and Clay Counties. Whether you’re hunting for family-friendly events, festive photo-ops, or outdoor adventures, there’s something here for everyone. Here are some of our top picks (and hidden gems!)

2025 Holiday Lighting Celebration: White Christmas – Platte City

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., the Platte City, Missouri downtown will be all lit up for the annual lighting event. Expect Santa’s arrival, a horse-drawn carriage, kids’ crafts, face-painting and festive fun. Note: Trolley Rides will be provided from PCHS parking lot to Main St every 15 minutes.

Winter Magic – Platte Purchase Park

Experience Winter Magic – Kansas City’s Holiday Light Party from November 26, 2025 through January 4, 2026 at Platte Purchase Park in the KC Northland. This dazzling drive-through attraction features over a mile of synchronized holiday lights, glowing tunnels, larger-than-life displays, and festive music streamed right to your car. It’s designed for families, date nights, and anyone who loves cozy winter evenings filled with holiday cheer. Guests can take the route at their own pace, making it perfect for warm drinks, kids in pajamas, or creating a new seasonal tradition. Open nightly after dark, Winter Magic is one of the Northland’s most popular and photo-worthy holiday experiences. Note: Be sure to grab tickets early — prime nights often sell out!

38th Annual Turkey Trail Trot – Downtown Parkville

Kick off the holiday by burning some calories (and maybe earning your pie!) at the Parkville Turkey Trail Trot on Thursday, November 27, 2025 (start time 9 a.m.). The course runs along the scenic Missouri River at English Landing Park in Parkville, MO. The event supports local parks and the animal shelter — a great way to give back. Note: Register early to guarantee a t-shirt. Bring your running shoes and a light jacket — morning temps can be chilly.

Santa’s House & Strolls – Parkville

From Nov. 28 through Dec. 21, 2025, children and families can visit “Santa’s House” in downtown Parkville on scheduled days and hours. A super fun opportunity for memorable holiday photos. Note: Check the specific dates/times (weekends and selected evenings) and plan a stop at local shops while you’re there.

2nd Annual Weston Wassailing Market – Weston

If you are looking for something fun to do with the whole family, the 2nd Annual Weston Wassailing Market is on November 29–30, 10 AM–5 PM! Enjoy an old-world outdoor market with 65+ artisan vendors, delicious food, warm Wassail, Polar Express rides, storytellers, and an old-world Santa. This festive family event is FREE — don’t miss the holiday magic in historic Weston! Note: We attended this cute event last year and enjoyed strolling through the market booths and drinking the delicious Wassail.

Christmas on the River – Downtown Parkville

Mark Friday, December 5, 2025, 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. on your calendar for the spectacular Christmas on the River in downtown Parkville. Highlights include a holiday market, Santa photos, live entertainment, hot chocolate and a fireworks display over the Missouri River at approx. 8:45 p.m. Note: Free shuttle service is available (6–10 p.m.) from the community center to ease parking woes.

10th Annual Lighted Christmas Parade – Downtown Smithville

Downtown Smithville lights up on December 6th at 6 p.m. with its beloved Lighted Christmas Parade, featuring glowing floats, festive music, and tons of small-town holiday charm. Families pack the sidewalks with blankets and cocoa as local businesses, clubs, and community groups roll through with creative, twinkling displays. Many make a full day of it by attending the Chamber’s CandyLand Christmas event earlier in the afternoon before the parade and Mayor’s Tree Lighting. Arrive early for parking, dress warm, and plan to visit downtown shops while you’re there — it’s one of the areas most magical holiday nights.

Celebrate Christmas at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park – Lawson

Celebrate Christmas at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park on Saturday, December 6th from 2:00–7:00 PM. Visitors can stroll through the Visitor’s Center, enjoy Christmas music, and take home a festive craft. The Historic Site will be beautifully lit with lanterns and candles, and guests can sip warm Wassail or hot cider at the Watkins summer kitchen. A limited number of free guided tours of the Watkins House are available and must be reserved in advance online or by phone. For assistance or more information, call 816-580-3387.

Between the historic charm of Parkville and Weston and the community spirit of Smithville, the Northland comes alive during Thanksgiving weekend and the start of December. From twinkling lights to family moments, this 11-day stretch kicks off the season with warmth, joy, and plenty to explore!
